Biography

Anthony Mann was an influential American director, actor, production manager, and set designer. He began his career on Broadway at age 18 before transitioning to Hollywood in 1939, where he initially served as an assistant director at Paramount. Mann gained recognition as a director for low-budget thrillers and film noir, working with studios like Republic and RKO. He achieved notable success at Universal, directing a series of psychological Westerns starring James Stewart, characterized by themes of revenge and obsession. His filmography includes the biopic The Glenn Miller Story (1954) and major epics such as El Cid (1961) and The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964). Mann received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. He passed away on April 29, 1967, during the production of A Dandy in Aspic, leaving a legacy as a significant figure in American cinema.
