Diahann Carroll was an American actress and singer, recognized for her groundbreaking contributions to film and television. Born in The Bronx, New York, in 1935, she gained prominence as the first African-American actress to star in her own television sitcom with "Julia" (NBC, 1968-1971). Carroll received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in "Claudine" (1974) and made history as the first African-American woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in 1962. Her notable television roles included Dominique Devereaux in "Dynasty" (ABC, 1981-89) and appearances in series like "A Different World" and "Grey's Anatomy." Carroll also had a successful career in music, releasing over a dozen albums. She passed away on October 4, 2019, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy as a trailblazer for African-American performers in the entertainment industry.
