Emil Jannings
Biography
Emil Jannings (July 23, 1884 - January 3, 1950) was a Swiss-born actor recognized as the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was born Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz and initially found success in Hollywood. However, his career declined with the advent of sound films, as his thick German accent posed challenges for American audiences. Jannings returned to Europe and gained acclaim for his role opposite Marlene Dietrich in the film The Blue Angel, which was produced in both English and German. His later involvement in pro-Nazi films significantly impacted his reputation, hindering any potential for a return to the U.S. film industry. In 1941, he was designated Artist of the State by Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels. Jannings received the Academy Award for his performances in The Way of All Flesh and The Last Command during the 1927/1928 awards season.
