Biography

Emily Haines was born on January 25, 1974, in New Delhi, India, and raised in Canada. She is the daughter of Canadian poet Paul Haines and has two siblings: Avery Haines, a television journalist, and Tim Haines, owner of Bluestreak Records. After moving to Peterborough, Ontario, at the age of three, Haines was immersed in a creative environment that influenced her musical development. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts, where she met future collaborators Amy Millan and Kevin Drew. In the early 1990s, Haines and Millan formed their first band, which evolved into the project hHead. Their early work culminated in the limited release of the album "Cut in Half and Also Double" in 1996. Haines is also known for her later success as the lead vocalist of the band Metric.
