Biography
Fernando Rey was a prominent Spanish actor known for his work in film, theatre, and television. Born in Corunna, Spain, he began his acting career in 1936 as an extra in films and adopted the stage name Fernando Rey, taking his mother's surname, which means "king" in Spanish. He gained recognition in the 1940s, with notable roles in "Eugenia de Montijo" and "Locura de amor." Rey's international fame grew through collaborations with directors such as Luis Buñuel and Orson Welles, featuring in acclaimed films like "Viridiana," "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie," and "The French Connection." He won several awards, including Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival in 1977 for "Elisa, vida mía." Rey served as chairman of the Spanish Movie Arts and Sciences Academy and remained active in Spanish cinema until his death from cancer in Madrid in 1994. He was married to actress Mabel Karr.
