Joe Spinell, born Joseph J. Spagnuolo on October 28, 1936, in Manhattan, New York City, was an American actor known for his roles in gritty urban films. He began his acting career in his teenage years, performing in various stage productions, including those at Joe Papp's Shakespeare Festival Theater. In 1960, he signed a performing contract with MGM and adopted the stage name Joe Spinell. He gained recognition for his performances in films such as The Godfather (1972) and Rocky (1976), often portraying tough characters. Spinell is perhaps best remembered for his lead role as Frank Zito in the horror film Maniac (1980). Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable directors and actors, earning a reputation as a character actor. Spinell passed away on January 13, 1989, in Queens, New York, leaving behind a significant body of work and a legacy in the film industry.
