Biography

Joyce DeWitt was born on April 23, 1949, in Wheeling, West Virginia, and raised in Indiana. She developed an interest in acting during high school, leading her to pursue a theater major at Ball State University and later earn a Master of Fine Arts from UCLA. DeWitt's breakthrough role came in 1977 when she was cast as Janet Wood on the hit sitcom "Three's Company," where she became known for her sensible and down-to-earth character. Despite her fame, DeWitt preferred to maintain a low profile and remained active in theater. After "Three's Company," she traveled extensively before settling in New Mexico. DeWitt has participated in various charitable efforts, including the LIFE organization, which addresses world hunger and homelessness. In 2009, she faced legal issues related to a DUI arrest, to which she later pled no contest. DeWitt has three siblings and has a mix of Swedish, Italian, and Irish ancestry.
