Biography

Julia Sweeney, born in 1959 in Spokane, Washington, is an American actress and comedian best known for her work on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in the early 1990s. She gained fame for her androgynous character Pat, which became a cultural touchstone and was featured in numerous sketches. Sweeney initially pursued a career in accounting but transitioned to performance by taking improv classes at the Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles. After joining SNL as a featured player in 1990, she became a regular cast member the following season. Following her departure from the show in 1994, she created the one-woman stage show "God Said, Ha!" which addressed personal challenges, including her battle with cervical cancer. The show received critical acclaim and was later adapted into a film. Sweeney continued to explore personal themes in her subsequent works, including "In the Family Way" and "Letting Go of God."
