Biography

Dame Margaret Rutherford, DBE was an English character actress who gained prominence in the post-World War II era. She became well-known for her roles in film adaptations of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit and Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. In 1963, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of The Duchess of Brighton in The VIPs. Rutherford is perhaps most recognized for her performances as Miss Marple in several films based on Agatha Christie's novels during the 1960s. Her distinctive acting style and memorable roles have left a lasting impact on British cinema.
