Pope Saint John Paul II, born in Poland, served as the pope of the Catholic Church from 16 October 1978 until his death on 2 April 2005. He was the second longest-serving pope in modern history, following Pope Pius IX. John Paul II was notable for being the first non-Italian pope in over 450 years, since Pope Adrian VI. His papacy was marked by extensive travels, interfaith dialogue, and a focus on human rights. He played a significant role in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and was a prominent advocate for peace and social justice. Canonized as a saint in 2014, his legacy continues to influence the Catholic Church and its followers worldwide.
