Biography

Roy Arne Lennart Andersson, born on 31 March 1943, is a prominent Swedish film director noted for his distinctive cinematic style. He gained recognition with his film A Swedish Love Story (1970) and is celebrated for his "Living trilogy," which includes Songs from the Second Floor (2000), You, the Living (2007), and A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014). His work is characterized by long takes, absurdist comedy, and a satirical portrayal of Swedish culture. Andersson has also directed over 400 commercials and two short films, but has focused on only six feature-length films over six decades. His film A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence won the Golden Lion at the 71st Venice International Film Festival, making him the only Swedish director to receive this honor. Andersson is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary European filmmakers, with multiple films submitted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
