Setsuko Hara

Biography

Setsuko Hara was a prominent Japanese actress celebrated for her roles in classic cinema, particularly in films directed by Yasujirô Ozu. Over her three-decade career, she became known for portraying devoted daughters, earning her the nickname "Eternal Virgin." Despite her popularity, Hara remained single and childless, a choice that sparked controversy in 1950s Japan. She faced significant challenges during this decade, including health issues and the tragic death of her cameraman brother in an on-set accident. In 1963, following the death of Ozu, Hara abruptly retired from acting at the height of her fame, citing a lack of personal fulfillment in her career. She subsequently lived a private life in Kamakura, Japan, and declined all role offers. Hara's notable films include the Noriko trilogy, with "Tôkyô monogatari" (1953) being among her most recognized works.
