Television is an American rock band formed in New York City in 1973. The group is recognized as a significant influence on the punk and New Wave movements, despite maintaining a cult following in the United States. They achieved notable commercial success in Europe. Television emerged from the early 1970s New York underground rock scene, sharing the stage with influential acts such as the Patti Smith Group, The Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell and The Voidoids, and Talking Heads. Their music is characterized by its complexity and technical proficiency, primarily driven by the guitar work of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. Television's distinct sound contrasts with the more minimalistic approach of contemporaries like the Ramones, positioning them as pioneers within their genre.
