Biography

Sir Thomas Daniel "Tom" Courtenay, born on 25 February 1937, is an English actor recognized for his significant contributions to film and theatre. He gained prominence in the early 1960s with acclaimed performances in films such as The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), Billy Liar (1963), and Dr. Zhivago (1965). Following his success in cinema, Courtenay focused primarily on theatre, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in the film adaptation of The Dresser (1983), a part he had previously performed on both the West End and Broadway. In recognition of his extensive career in the arts, he was awarded a knighthood in February 2001 for his service to cinema and theatre.
