Yo La Tengo is an American indie rock band formed in 1984 in Hoboken, New Jersey. The band has consisted of Ira Kaplan (guitars, vocals), Georgia Hubley (drums, vocals), and James McNew (bass, vocals) since 1992. Known for their eclectic sound, Yo La Tengo has garnered a dedicated cult following despite limited mainstream success, often being described as "the quintessential critics’ band." Their repertoire includes a wide range of cover songs, performed both live and in recordings. The band debuted with the single "The River of Water" in 1985 and released their first LP, "Ride the Tiger," in 1986. Over the years, they have collaborated with various artists and contributed to film soundtracks. Their significant albums include "Painful" (1993) and "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" (1997), both of which received critical acclaim. Yo La Tengo continues to perform and record music, maintaining their influence in the indie rock scene.
