Andrzej Zulawski, born on November 22, 1940, in Lwow, Poland (now L'viv, Ukraine), is a renowned film director known for his distinctive style and thematic complexity. He began his career as an assistant to celebrated Polish director Andrzej Wajda. Zulawski's second film, Diabel, faced a ban in Poland, prompting his relocation to France, where he directed L'Important c'est d'aimer (1975) featuring Romy Schneider. After returning to Poland, he spent two years on a project that remained unfinished due to governmental restrictions. Subsequently, Zulawski primarily resided and worked in France, creating a series of influential art films. He is noted for his collaboration with actress Sophie Marceau, who became a key figure in his later works. Zulawski's films often explore themes of love, madness, and existential struggle, solidifying his status in the realm of international cinema.
