Bathory

Biography

Bathory is a significant figure in the development of black metal and viking metal, known for pioneering the genre since its formation in 1983. The band's founder, Quorthon, whose real name was Tomas, adopted various pseudonyms throughout his career, including Black Spade and Ace Shoot, ultimately settling on Quorthon, a name inspired by a list of demons. Bathory's first recording was two tracks for the Scandinavian Metal Attack compilation LP in 1984, and they played a limited number of live shows in their early years before Quorthon decided against performing live. Despite rumors regarding his personal life and familial connections, including speculations about Börje "Boss" Forsberg being his father, Quorthon consistently denied such claims. He passed away from a heart attack on June 3, 2004, in Hässelby, Stockholm, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence the metal music scene.
