Biography

Therion, originally known as Megatherion, is a Swedish symphonic metal band founded by Christofer Johnsson in 1987. The name "therion" is derived from the Greek word meaning "Beast" and pays homage to the Celtic Frost album To Mega Therion. Initially starting as a death metal band, Therion evolved to incorporate orchestral elements into their music, utilizing choirs and classical musicians as integral parts of their compositions. They are recognized as the first metal band to feature a fully live orchestra and are credited with popularizing and influencing the symphonic metal genre, often referred to as "Opera Metal." The band's lyrics draw from various mythologies and explore themes of occultism, magic, and ancient traditions. Much of their lyrical content is penned by Thomas Karlsson, the founder of the magical order Dragon Rouge. Throughout its history, Therion has undergone numerous line-up and stylistic changes.
