Biography

Benny Goodman was an influential American clarinetist, composer, and bandleader born in Chicago, Illinois. He studied clarinet at Jane Addams's Hull House and gained experience playing with prominent jazz musicians in Chicago before moving to New York City in 1928. In 1934, he formed his own orchestra, which included his brother Harry on bass. Goodman is renowned for creating the Benny Goodman Trio in 1935, which evolved into a quartet with the addition of vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. His orchestra gained national fame, earning him the title "King of Swing." A key figure in breaking racial barriers in music, Goodman showcased both black and white musicians in his performances. He also had a successful classical music career, commissioning works from notable composers. Goodman served as a musical ambassador during the Cold War and continued to perform until the 1980s. He passed away in New York City from a heart attack.
