Gina McKee, born on 14 April 1964 in the United Kingdom, is a prominent actress known for her work in television, film, and theatre. Growing up in a working-class family in County Durham, she discovered her passion for acting during her primary school years and participated in a youth drama group that sparked her interest in the profession. McKee began her career in television with minor roles, making her film debut in 1988 with Ken Russell's The Lair of the White Worm. She gained significant acclaim for her portrayal of Mary in the BBC drama Our Friends in the North, earning multiple awards in 1997. Her theatre credits include notable works such as Harold Pinter's plays and a revival of King Lear. McKee has been married to Kez Cary since 1989 and has been a vegetarian since 1982. She received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Sunderland in 2002.
