Mario Van Peebles, born on January 15, 1957, in Mexico, is a prominent actor, director, and producer based in the United States. He is known for his influential contributions to modern cinema, following in the footsteps of his father, Melvin Van Peebles. Van Peebles gained recognition for his portrayal of Malcolm X in Michael Mann's film ALI and for his role in the indie feature THE HEBREW HAMMER. His directorial debut, NEW JACK CITY, was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. He also directed the multicultural western POSSE and the historical drama PANTHER, which earned him the Silver Leopard Award at the Locarno Film Festival.
