Virginia Raggi
Biography
Virginia Elena Raggi, born on July 18, 1978, in Rome, Italy, is an Italian lawyer and politician affiliated with the Five Star Movement (Movimento 5 Stelle, M5E). She made history by becoming the first female mayor of Rome on June 22, 2016. Raggi grew up in the San Giovanni-Appio Latino neighborhood and completed her education at Isacco Newton Scientific High School before obtaining a law degree from Roma Tre University, specializing in civil law, intellectual property, and new technologies.
Raggi joined the Five Star Movement in 2011, forming the group in the XIV Municipality of Rome. She served as a councilor and spokesperson for the M5E from 2013 to 2015, focusing on education and environmental issues. In the 2016 municipal elections, she won the party's primary and secured her mayoral position after receiving 67.2% of the votes in the runoff, defeating the Democratic Party candidate.
