William Joseph Devane, born September 5, 1939, is an American actor known for his extensive work in film, television, and theater. He gained prominence for his role as Greg Sumner on the primetime soap opera Knots Landing, which aired from 1983 to 1993. Devane was born in Albany, New York, and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He first earned recognition for portraying Robert Kennedy in the Off-Broadway play MacBird and later as President John F. Kennedy in the TV movie The Missiles of October. His notable film credits include McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Marathon Man, and Space Cowboys. Devane has portrayed various government officials in series like The West Wing and 24. He has also appeared in the ABC soap opera Revenge and the film The Dark Knight Rises. Devane is recognized for his versatile acting career spanning several decades.
