Biography

William Hartnell was born on 8 January 1908 in St. Pancras, London. He began his acting career at age 16 after being adopted by art connoisseur Hugh Blaker, who helped him secure a position with Sir Frank Benson's Shakespearean Company. Hartnell toured Britain and gained recognition for his roles in farce, eventually starring in productions such as "Charley's Aunt." He appeared in several films, including "The Way Ahead" and "This Sporting Life." Hartnell is best remembered for his role as the First Doctor in the iconic television series "Doctor Who," which he originated in 1963 at the age of 55. His portrayal contributed significantly to the show's legacy. Hartnell faced health challenges during his tenure, which affected his performances. He passed away on 23 April 1975, leaving behind a lasting impact on British television and theatre. His granddaughter, Jessica Carney, authored a biography about him titled "Who's There?" in 1996.
