Alan Bates
Biography
Sir Alan Arthur Bates CBE (February 17, 1934 – December 27, 2003) was an esteemed English actor known for his versatile performances in film, television, and theater. Born in Allestree, Derby, he was the eldest of three brothers in a musical family, with a cellist father and a pianist mother. Initially encouraged to pursue music, Bates shifted his focus to acting at the age of 11, later earning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He briefly served in the Royal Air Force before embarking on his acting career. Bates was married to actress Victoria Ward from 1970 until her death in 1992. They had twin sons, Benedick and Tristan, the latter of whom tragically passed away in 1990. Bates is remembered for his significant contributions to the performing arts and his impactful roles throughout his career.
