Biography

Lewis Gilbert CBE was a British film director, producer, and screenwriter known for his contributions to cinema, particularly in the mid-20th century. His notable works include "Reach for the Sky" (1956), "Sink the Bismarck!" (1960), "Alfie" (1966), "Educating Rita" (1983), and "Shirley Valentine" (1989). Gilbert also directed three James Bond films: "You Only Live Twice" (1967), "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977), and "Moonraker" (1979). During World War II, he served in the Royal Air Force's film unit and the First Motion Picture Unit of the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was under the command of American director William Keighley. Gilbert's work has left a lasting impact on the film industry, showcasing his versatility and storytelling abilities across various genres.
