Biography

Alice White, born Alva Violet White on August 24, 1904, in Paterson, New Jersey, was an American actress known for her roles in silent and early sound films. After her mother died in 1915, she was raised by her grandparents. Alice attended an all-girls school and later Roanoke College before moving to California, where she graduated from Hollywood High School. Initially working as a secretary, she was hired by Charlie Chaplin as a script girl, which led her to acting. She debuted in The Thief of Bagdad and gained fame with films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1928). Despite her popularity, she faced criticism for her acting and personal controversies, including a tumultuous love life. After a series of marriages and a decline in her film career, she returned to secretarial work. Alice passed away on February 19, 1983, after suffering a stroke, leaving no immediate survivors.
