Biography

Fred Gwynne, born Frederick Hubbard Gwynne on July 10, 1926, in New York City, was a prominent American character actor recognized for his roles in television comedies, notably as Officer Francis Muldoon in "Car 54, Where Are You?" (1961) and as Herman Munster in "The Munsters" (1964). Standing at 6'5", he possessed a distinctive baritone voice, which he showcased in various Broadway musicals. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Gwynne graduated from Harvard University, where he developed his passion for acting. He made his Broadway debut in 1952 and later appeared in notable films including "Pet Sematary" (1989) and "My Cousin Vinny" (1992). In addition to acting, Gwynne was an accomplished author and illustrator, publishing several children's books. He passed away on July 2, 1993, in Taneytown, Maryland, due to pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a legacy cherished by fans of classic television.
