Biography

Osamu Tezuka was a renowned Japanese manga artist, cartoonist, and animator, born in Osaka Prefecture. He is often referred to as "the Father of Manga," "the Godfather of Manga," and "the God of Manga" due to his prolific output and pioneering techniques that redefined the medium. Tezuka is frequently compared to Walt Disney, who influenced his early works. He initiated the manga revolution in Japan with his 1947 publication, New Treasure Island. Among his most notable creations are the children’s series Astro Boy, Princess Knight, and Kimba the White Lion, alongside adult-oriented works such as Black Jack, Phoenix, and Buddha, which garnered numerous awards. Tezuka passed away from stomach cancer in 1989, leaving a significant legacy that inspired both the public and fellow artists. A museum dedicated to his life and work was established in Takarazuka, and he received many posthumous accolades.
