Mary William Ethelbert Appleton "Billie" Burke (August 7, 1884 – May 14, 1970) was an American actress best known for her role as Glinda the Good Witch of the North in the classic musical film The Wizard of Oz. Burke gained recognition for her talent and charm, earning an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Emily Kilbourne in the 1938 film Merrily We Live. In addition to her film career, she was married to prominent theatrical producer Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., known for the Ziegfeld Follies, from 1914 until his death in 1932. Throughout her career, Burke became a beloved figure in American entertainment, remembered for her contributions to both stage and screen.
