Biography

Frank Morgan, born Francis Wuppermann, was an American actor renowned for his role as the title character in The Wizard of Oz (1939). Born into a wealthy family as one of eleven children, he followed his brother, Ralph Morgan, into acting, making his Broadway debut in 1914 and his film debut in 1916. Morgan was known for portraying courtly and eccentric characters, often exuding charm and sympathy. Notable performances include his roles as an alcoholic telegraph operator in The Human Comedy (1943) and a shop owner in The Shop Around the Corner (1940). He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance in The Affairs of Cellini (1934). Frank Morgan passed away from a heart attack on September 18, 1949, in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 59.
