John Spencer

Biography

John Spencer was an American actor best known for his role as Leo McGarry on the television series "The West Wing." Born into a lower middle-class family, he grew up near Paterson, New Jersey, and left home at 16 to attend the Professional Children's School in New York City. Spencer gained recognition in the 1960s with a recurring role on "The Patty Duke Show" and later became celebrated for his stage performances in the 1970s and 1980s, winning an Obie Award and a Drama League Award for his work. He struggled with alcoholism but achieved sobriety in 1989. Spencer passed away from a heart attack on December 16, 2005, just days before his 59th birthday. He was involved in various charitable activities, including support for AIDS patients, and was known for his gravelly voice and distinctive grey hair. He is remembered for his contributions to both stage and screen.
