Biography

Lane Smith was an American actor known for his versatile performances in theater and television. He was an alumnus of the Actors Studio and studied drama for two years at Carnegie Mellon University before serving in the Army. Smith gained acclaim for his role as a disgraced Richard Nixon in the 1989 TV-docudrama "The Final Days," which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He also won a Drama Desk Award for his performance in the Broadway play "Glengarry Glen Ross." Throughout his career, he portrayed various characters, including Perry White in adaptations of Superman. Smith was married and had two sons: Robby Smith from his first marriage and another son, Robbie, who was 18 at the time of his passing. He suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in his later years and was survived by his wife, sons, and siblings.
