Biography

Gypsy Rose Lee, born Rose Louise Hovick in 1911 in Seattle, Washington, was a prominent American burlesque performer, actress, and author. She began her career in vaudeville as part of an act with her sister, June, before transitioning to burlesque as a teenager. Known for her unique blend of humor and striptease, she adopted the stage name Gypsy Rose Lee, which became synonymous with her success. Lee authored the memoir "Gypsy," published in 1957, detailing her tumultuous childhood and complex relationship with her ambitious mother, Rose. This autobiography inspired the acclaimed Broadway musical "Gypsy," which premiered in 1959. Lee appeared in several films throughout her career, including a cameo in "The Trouble with Angels" in 1966. She was married three times and had one son, Erik Lee Preminger. Gypsy Rose Lee passed away from cancer in 1970, leaving a lasting legacy in both burlesque and musical theater.
